Humanities against environmental crises

The SNF project “Mediating the Ecological Imperative: Formats and Modes of Engagement” is a joint research project of the Institutes of Art History, American Studies and Social Anthropology at the University of Bern.

It reached a high point in September with the two-day international conference “Remediations: Ecologies, Encounters, Engagements”, which was opened by Virginia Richter, Vice-Rector and Rector-designate of the University of Bern. In her speech, she called for sustainability in the humanities to become much more visible and for them to share their knowledge with the public.

The conference showed that the humanities can make a variety of contributions to tackling environmental crises. The participants discussed how the ecological imperative - as a necessity for action - can be communicated by means of culturally designed future scenarios in contemporary art, literature and cinematic practice.
