The Institute of Social Anthropology invited the award-winning author Amitav Ghosh (“The Curse of Nutmeg”) to its Anthropology Talks series in Bern in 2023.
By linking his research work on colonial history with the climate crisis, Ghosh has become one of the world’s most important voices arguing for radical change in the way we treat our planet. At a public reading at Stadttheater Bern, this holder of a PhD in social anthropology entered into conversation with research, culture and civil society – entitled “Imagining Worlds”.
The following day, students and anybody interested in the topic had an opportunity to attend two fully booked workshops at the University of Bern to join Amitav Ghosh as he explored questions about how his work can serve as an inspiration not only for ethnographic research but also for cultural, activist and political efforts, as well as how creative and ethnographic writing about the climate crisis can help people imagine a fairer future.
